I will forever be grateful to the man who believed in me at SRS and set the standard for what it means to protect and inspire in the field of Health Physics.</p><div><hr></div><div impact as <strong>Jim Stafford</strong>. With a career spanning over <strong>47 years</strong>, Stafford&#8217;s journey exemplifies the dedication, adaptability, and leadership that define the best in the radiation protection community.</p><h2><strong>An Accidental Pioneer with a Purpose</strong></h2><p>Jim&#8217;s entry into Health Physics wasn&#8217;t preordained. In high school in Port Neches-Groves, Texas, he weighed careers in medicine and nuclear energy. &#8220;After taking Biology and Physiology,&#8221; he recalls, &#8220;I decided I was not a big fan of blood.&#8221; Instead, with nuclear energy gaining national attention in the 1970s, he enrolled in <strong>Texas A&amp;M University&#8217;s</strong> Nuclear Engineering program, ultimately gravitating toward <strong>Radiation Protection Engineering</strong> due to its fascinating blend of environmental, biological, and technical disciplines.</p><p>An internship at the <strong>Texas A&amp;M cyclotron and TRIGA reactor</strong> sealed his commitment to the profession. &#8220;I was immediately hooked,&#8221; he says &#8212; and that spark would ignite a career that influenced radiation safety practices across continents.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.healthphysics.blog/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading The Health Physics Brief! Over the course of three decades at SRS, he held 17 roles, ranging from Reactor Operations Control Room Supervisor to Director of Radiological Protection. He later lent his expertise to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), where he helped lead environmental safety and health efforts following a major underground incident in 2014.</p><p>Since joining Global Energy Services (GES) in 2019, Stafford has continued to serve as a senior consultant, providing independent evaluations, audits, and critical insights into contractor assurance, industrial hygiene, and radiological safety. His work has touched nearly every corner of the U.S. Department of Energy complex, including Hanford, INL, Oak Ridge, and SPRU.</p><p>Beyond operational roles, Stafford&#8217;s leadership includes service as Chair of EFCOG&#8217;s Radiological Protection Subgroup, Director of the American Academy of Health Physics, and inaugural Chair of Aiken Technical College&#8217;s Radiological Protection Advisory Board. His certifications &#8212; CHP Emeritus, CSP (ret.), and PE (ret.) &#8212; mirror the depth of his technical expertise.</p><h2><strong>Evolving with the Field &#8212; And Guiding Its Future</strong></h2><p>Despite dramatic advances in instrumentation and regulatory frameworks, Stafford emphasizes that the core mission of Health Physics remains the same: protecting workers, the public, and the environment from ionizing radiation.</p><p>Looking ahead, he foresees HP professionals expanding their roles: &#8220;Personnel may be asked to do more than just focus on ionizing radiation. Industrial hygiene and basic safety tasks may become part of the HP toolkit,&#8221; he predicts. In addition, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is already helping transform Medical Health Physics.
